Jay Howell and I (Ferris Plock) were asked by the good ladies of the keep-a-breast foundation to paint a mural to help raise money for their educational outreach programs. We said we would since Jay and I are both huge fans of boobs and have both had friends and/or family members who have had to struggle with breast cancer. So Jay and I hopped on a plane out of rainy SFO and headed to warm Austin where the keep-a-breast foundation was sponsoring a couple of events (including our mural) at SXSW.
Jay and I were on a real natural high as we waited for our plane at SFO.
The natural high wore off in Houston waiting for the shortest connector flight ever.
Here we are at our hotel., which kinda looked like a Miami Vice set but, our hotel room was gigantic and supersweet.
The hotel was a bit outside of downtown...(those really small buildings are downtown)
We decided to hoof it into town to get a lay of the land. We soon ran into something out of a Stephen King novel.
We rewarded ourselves for our five mile adventure into town with cold beers and some grub at a tasty joint called, "The Boiling Pot."
We ordered food and they dumped a huge bucket of boiled animals and starch on our table...
And they bibbed us.
We ate all of that in about 20 seconds... yes, that is a vat of butter for dipping....
They also had crayons so we sketched out some ideas for our mural.
We felt a little bit guilty about eating all of those little dudes.
The next morning we were picked up by the keep-a-breast foundation members (not pictured at all in this documentation due to the fact that all the pictures I took of them were out of focus). They had tons of junk in their trunk.
They brought and bought a shit-ton of supplies for us to work with.
The keep-a-breast foundation also invited Canadian painter, Cody Cochrane to paint with us which was amazing...
Arlo Jamrog showed up and became our priceless art slave...
We started rolling our colors
These are the two basic colors we started with and then splintered off from there with all kinds of different materials.
We spent the second day blocking out characters and sketching out characters.
Here is some of Cody's work in-progress.
Here we are on day three as the mural started to fill in and the colors started to get a little more awesome.
Kinda out of order but, we really depended on Arlo for all sorts of stuff so I thought I'd show him representing properly again.
Cool to see Jay Howell's awesome wolves so big...
This shot proves that Cody came up with the boob mountains and it wasn't a dude just getting off on drawing boobs.
Big Tex(as) has so much good food that we found ourselves craving salted meats and cheeses all the time.
It didn't help that this cat kept on giving us high-5s and free beers.
We decided not to go to Wendy's...
Documentation of Jay Howell eating a big ol' Flinstones rib.
Back to Art... Close up of eyes on one of the characters
Cody did a ton of amazing line work that was super detailed.
Man... I don't have a great shot of the mural but here is the left half.
Jay was bodyguarding the other half because it looked so awesome.
Then he left and I took this picture.
Then the mural got taken down and sent back to the west coast.
We were gosh darn exhausted after four long sessions on the mural.
But we rallied because we had the Mayyors staying in our hotel room and they were playing with the Oh Sees at some house party...
The Oh Sees played in the front yard of the house party but, the police showed up and tried to shut down the dance party... Arlo, Jay, and I helped the Mayyors set up inside so we could continue to dance and freak out.
Which we did... The mayyors were so good we all turned into electric colors.
And then we blasted off (that's me on the left)
This is the chandelier that I kept banging my head into...
I scored a backstage pass (jay ripped the screen off the kitchen window) and I caught this small clip of the Intelligence playing.
The last night we were there, Cody gave Jay a "SHREDTIME" tattoo.
Then Jay returned the favor.
Man that was awesome trip with everybody in Austin!
little detail shots of the mural
The mural that we made is being auctioned off by the Keep-a-Breast Foundation. For more information, please check out their website at: www.keep-a-breast.org.
